ETH Zurich — Swiss Federal Institute of Technology
University Virtual Tour Series — Edition 9

I'm delighted to share the ninth edition of the University Virtual Tour Series — and my first spotlight on continental Europe. ETH Zurich is the university where Albert Einstein studied and later taught, the #1 university in continental Europe, and — remarkably — a world top-10 institution whose annual tuition is roughly the price of a good Indian private engineering college. This edition is different from the previous eight in one important way: ETH's undergraduate programmes are taught in German, so I present two honest pathways — an ambitious Bachelor's route for early planners, and the proven English-taught Master's route that most Indian students take. Both are explained clearly below.

A Note on Physical University Visits

I strongly recommend that parents of Grade 9 and above students make the time to visit at least one university — ETH Zurich, a local university in India, or any institution of your choice. A physical visit gives your child something no virtual tour can replicate: they will see the infrastructure and facilities with their own eyes, observe how professors engage with students in live classrooms, and most importantly, spend time talking to existing students about their day-to-day experience. These conversations almost always leave a lasting impression and help students make more grounded, confident decisions about their future. A local university visit is a completely valid and valuable starting point. If you'd like guidance planning a visit, feel free to get in touch.

ETH Zurich Admission — Two Honest Pathways for Indian Students

Please read this carefully — ETH is structurally different from every other university in this series. An Indian Class 12 certificate (CBSE, CISCE, State Board) or Cambridge A Level does not grant direct Bachelor's entry. All Indian certificate holders must pass the ETH entrance examination, which is conducted in German. For this reason, the table below is organised by pathway rather than by board. For most families, the Master's pathway (English-taught, after an Indian Bachelor's degree) is the recommended route, and the Bachelor's pathway is a realistic ambition only for students who begin German seriously by Grade 8–9. Reach out for personalised application strategy guidance.

Requirement Bachelor's Pathway (German) Master's Pathway (English) — Recommended
Who is this pathway for? Students who commit to learning German early (ideally from Grade 8–9) and are willing to take the ETH entrance examination. CBSE, CISCE, State Board and Cambridge A Level students are all treated the same way: an Indian Class 12 or A Level certificate alone does not grant direct entry — the ETH entrance examination is mandatory. The proven route for most Indian students: complete a strong Bachelor's degree in India (B.Tech/B.E./B.Sc from a recognised university, minimum 3 years/180 ECTS), then apply directly to an English-taught ETH Master's programme. No German required for English-taught programmes; no entrance examination.
Language of Instruction German — all Bachelor's programmes are taught mainly in German. A C1-level German certificate (Goethe-Zertifikat C1, TestDaF, or telc C1 Hochschule) must be submitted by the application deadline (31 March). ETH offers no language courses for applicants. English — most Master's programmes are fully English-taught. IELTS 7.0+ or TOEFL iBT 100+ required. Some programmes recommend the GRE (target 320+ for competitive programmes like Computer Science).
Entrance Examination Mandatory for Indian certificate holders. Two types: Reduced (4 subjects — Mathematics I & II, Physics, Chemistry, Biology) or Comprehensive (8 subjects, adding German, History, Geography, etc.). ETH decides which applies after reviewing your application. The examination is conducted in German in Zurich each January. Not applicable — Master's admission is based on your Bachelor's academic record, motivation letter, CV and recommendations. Admission is selective (approx. 10–25% for competitive programmes).
Timeline Apply via eApply by 31 March 2026 → admissions decision + exam information → entrance examination January 2027 (18–28 January) → begin studies Autumn 2027. Plan for an approximately 18-month runway after Class 12. Application window: 1–30 November for the following Autumn semester (one of the earliest deadlines in Europe). Decisions by late February–early March. Begin studies September.
Application Fee & Portal CHF 150 via the ETH eApply portal (ethz.ch). Apply to one Bachelor's programme only. CHF 150 via eApply. Documents: transcripts, CV, motivation letter, 2–3 academic recommendations, language certificate, GRE (if applicable).
Tuition Fees (from Autumn 2025) CHF 2,190 per semester for international students (approx. CHF 4,380/year ≈ INR 5.1 lakhs/year at ~CHF 117/INR, June 2026). Switzerland introduced a threefold tuition rate for foreign students from Autumn Semester 2025 — yet this remains roughly one-twentieth of US private university tuition. Same: CHF 2,190/semester. Total tuition for a full 2-year Master's: approx. CHF 8,760 (≈ INR 10.2 lakhs) — compare with INR 80 lakhs–1.2 crores for a comparable US Master's.
Scholarships Limited at Bachelor's level. Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships and external Indian awards (J.N. Tata Endowment, Inlaks) primarily target postgraduate study. Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme (ESOP) — ETH's flagship award: CHF 12,000 per semester living grant plus a full tuition waiver; approx. 60 awarded per year; apply with the Master's application (requires a thesis pre-proposal). Also: Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships, J.N. Tata Endowment, Inlaks Scholarship.
Visa & Proof of Funds Swiss National D (long-stay) visa via the Swiss Embassy/VFS. Critical: proof of funds of approx. CHF 21,000 must be in the student's own Swiss-recognised bank account — letters of financial support from parents are not accepted for Zurich. Processing: 8–12 weeks; start immediately after admission. Same visa process and same proof-of-funds rule. Plan the fund transfer to the student's own account well in advance.
Work Rights & Outcomes Part-time work up to 15 hours/week during semester; research assistant (Hilfsassistent) roles pay CHF 25–35/hour. Post-study: 6-month job-search residence permit after graduation; Switzerland applies non-EU quotas but ETH graduates are strongly placed. Same. Graduate outcomes: ~95% employed within 6 months; typical starting salaries CHF 90,000–120,000/year (≈ INR 1.05–1.4 crores) at employers including Google Zurich, Microsoft, Roche, Novartis, UBS and ABB.
The Planning Angle — Grade 8–9 vs Grade 11–12 Families

If your child is in Grade 8 or 9 today and dreams of Europe, adding German as a serious commitment now (the Goethe-Institut pathway A1 → C1 typically takes 3–4 years of steady study) keeps both ETH pathways open. If your child is already in Grade 11–12, the wise plan is: excel in an Indian or other international Bachelor's degree first, keep a strong GPA (8.8+/10), build research or project experience, and apply to ETH's English-taught Master's programmes in the November window of the final Bachelor's year. This is the route the vast majority of successful Indian ETH students have taken. Learning German also unlocks the wider German-speaking university world — including tuition-free public universities in Germany (see my Germany Undergraduate Admissions guide).

Voices from ETH — Indian Students

"A course like this wasn't available in India, so I decided to study abroad. ETH has many international students and my course too has a lot of diversity. The students are friendly and helpful. My closest friends here are from Switzerland and Germany."

— Indian Master's student, MSc Science, Technology and Policy, ETH Zurich | Official ETH Ambassadors blog (originally in The Indian Express), August 2023

"We were honoured to help answer questions about studying at ETH Zurich. This is a superb venture carried out by ETH Global and every ETH student should look forward to such an opportunity."

— Manisha De, India (Kolkata), ETH Zurich student, representing ETH at IIT Bombay Techfest | Official ETH Ambassadors blog, February 2020

Why Should Your Child Consider ETH Zurich?

1. Einstein's University — #1 in Continental Europe, 12 Years in the Global Top 10

ETH Zurich holds #8 globally in QS 2027 (joint with UCL), marking its 12th consecutive year in the world's top 10 and reaffirming its status as the highest-ranked university in continental Europe — the only university outside the US, UK and Singapore in the global top 10. Its overall QS score of 96.3 places it above 99.5% of universities worldwide. The legacy is extraordinary: 22 Nobel Laureates, including Albert Einstein, who completed his diploma at ETH in 1900 and returned as a professor in 1912 — students today walk the same Main Building corridors. ETH is ranked #1 in the world in Earth and Marine Sciences, Geology and Geophysics for seven consecutive years (QS by Subject), sits in the global top 3 for Engineering and Technology, and is top-10 worldwide in 16 disciplines. For students in the pure and applied sciences, ETH represents the deepest STEM specialisation available anywhere in Europe.

2. The Affordability Equation — Top-10 Education at One-Twentieth the US Price

This is where ETH changes the conversation for Indian families. From Autumn 2025, Switzerland tripled tuition for international students — and even after tripling, the fee is CHF 2,190 per semester, approximately CHF 4,380 per year (≈ INR 5.1 lakhs/year at ~CHF 117/INR, June 2026). Compare: Stanford's tuition alone is USD 67,731/year (≈ INR 64 lakhs) — roughly twelve times ETH's tuition. A complete 2-year ETH Master's costs about CHF 8,760 (≈ INR 10.2 lakhs) in tuition — less than many Indian private engineering colleges. Zurich's living costs are high (CHF 1,500–2,000/month), but even the all-in total of INR 26–33 lakhs/year is roughly a third of the US total. Then the return: ETH graduates report ~95% employment within 6 months and starting salaries of CHF 90,000–120,000/year (≈ INR 1.05–1.4 crores) — Zurich hosts Google's largest engineering campus outside the United States, plus Microsoft, IBM Research, Roche, Novartis, UBS and ABB. For merit-topping students, the Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme (ESOP) covers full tuition plus a CHF 12,000/semester living grant — a genuine full ride at a world top-10 university, with around 60 awarded annually.

3. The Language Reality — Why I Present ETH Honestly

Every other university in this series teaches undergraduates in English. ETH does not — all Bachelor's programmes are taught mainly in German, requiring a C1 certificate by the 31 March application deadline, and Indian certificate holders must additionally pass the ETH entrance examination, itself conducted in German each January in Zurich. I state this plainly because families deserve honest counsel, not glossy brochures. But the same fact creates two genuine opportunities. First: for a Grade 8–9 student who starts German now, the Bachelor's route is achievable — and German unlocks not just ETH but the entire German-speaking university world, including tuition-free public universities in Germany. Second: the English-taught Master's route requires no German at all, has one of Europe's cleanest application processes (November window, CHF 150 fee, no entrance exam), and is exactly how most Indian students at ETH arrived. The honest summary: ETH is not the easiest door in this series — it is one of the most rewarding for the right plan started at the right time.

4. Switzerland and the Indian Student Community

Zurich's Indian student community is well organised and growing. The Indian Students Association of Zurich (InSAZ) — run by ETH and University of Zurich students — maintains a detailed newcomer's guide covering everything from the Swiss National D visa to opening a bank account, assigns mentors to incoming Indian students, and celebrates Indian festivals through the year. ETH's institutional ties with India are active: ETH students have represented the university at IIT Bombay's Techfest (Asia's largest technology festival) through ETH Global, and research collaborations run with IISc Bangalore and the IITs. Practical matters parents should know: international students may work 15 hours/week during semesters (research assistant roles at ETH pay CHF 25–35/hour — among the world's best student wages), Switzerland grants a 6-month job-search permit after graduation, and Zurich is consistently ranked among the world's safest and highest-quality-of-life cities — a genuine comfort for parents sending a child abroad for the first time.

What Parents Should Know

  • Tuition (from Autumn 2025): CHF 2,190/semester ≈ CHF 4,380/year ≈ INR 5.1 lakhs/year — a full 2-year Master's costs ~INR 10.2 lakhs in tuition, versus INR 80 lakhs–1.2 crores for a comparable US Master's
  • Zurich living costs are high: budget CHF 1,500–2,000/month; total annual cost ~CHF 22,000–28,000 (≈ INR 26–33 lakhs) — still roughly one-third of the US all-in total
  • Bachelor's route: taught in German (C1 certificate by 31 March) + mandatory ETH entrance examination conducted in German each January + ~18-month runway after Class 12. Realistic only if German study begins by Grade 8–9
  • Recommended — Master's route: English-taught, apply 1–30 November in the final Bachelor's year, no entrance exam, IELTS 7.0+/TOEFL 100+, GPA 8.8+/10 competitive, GRE recommended for CS and similar programmes
  • ESOP scholarship: full tuition waiver + CHF 12,000/semester living grant; ~60 awards/year; requires a Master's thesis pre-proposal with the application — genuinely a full ride at a world top-10 university
  • Visa: Swiss National D (long-stay); proof of funds ~CHF 21,000 must be in the student's own Swiss-recognised bank account — parental support letters are not accepted for Zurich; processing 8–12 weeks, so begin immediately upon admission
  • Part-time work: 15 hours/week during semester (CHF 25–35/hour for research assistant roles); 6-month post-study job-search permit; ETH graduate starting salaries CHF 90,000–120,000/year
  • Acceptance rates: Master's ~10–25% depending on programme — selective, but meaningfully more accessible than the 3–5% rates at MIT, Stanford and Harvard in this series
